Mission
The Bend Roots Revival Project promotes performing arts
education in Bend,
and creates opportunities for performing artists in the area.
Roots Vision
It is the vision of Bend Roots that performing arts education can be
developed in Bend in a grass-roots way; at every level (K through Continuing
Education); with the help of effective partners in our community--private
programs, Bend Parks and Rec., school teachers/facilitators, and COCC
to name a few.
The First Project: Westside Revival
Bend Roots is currently working with middle schoolers at Westside Village
Magnet School--developing the WVMS Roots Music Program. Teaming with administation,
staff, and the kids themselves, the program supports self-advocacy through
musical exploration. Honoring the unique talents and intrests of each
kid, the Roots Music Program examins the history and world-orgins of American
music. From blues, jazz, bluegrass and native American music to country,
rock, pop, and hip-hop, students learn from those who have gone before
them to insight their own musical compositions and performance.

The Roots Music
class at Westside meets twice a week before school starts for and hour
and fifteen minutes. Students are required to have at least one year experience
on their instrument (all instruments are welcome). Two to four facilitator/instructors
(including Westside's music director Cliff Williams) lead kids in ensemble
hand drumming, followed by smaller group sessions focusing on creative
writing, developing a sense of melody, singing, basic music theory, and
collaborating with others.
The 2008 BEND ROOTS REVIVAL
Every year Bend
Roots organizes local talent to perform at the Bend Roots Revival. Here,
the community can witness first-hand the fruits of grass-roots, community-based
performing arts education; and also have an opportunity to participate
in the learning and performing.
You are invited to join the Bend Roots Family!
The Bend Roots Revival, now in itıs third year, is a weekend-long celebration
of our local performing arts community. The annual event is also now an
official project of KPOV Bend Community Radio.
The 2008 Bend Roots Revival will take place September 26th,
27th and 28th at the corner of 14th and Galveston Avenue. Nestled into
one of Bendıs oldest Westside neighborhoods, four stages will host fifty-five
local acts and workshops.
As a project of KPOV Bend Community Radio, all Revival performances and
workshops are free and open to the public. The event is underwritten by
pure community giving and effort, and hosted by The Victorian Café and
Parrilla Grill.
The Long Road Foundation of Bend has graciously committed $6000 to Bend
Roots (through KPOV) to be used as payment for performers at this yearıs
Revival. Bend Roots seeks to match this grant with donations in-cash and
in-kind to secure professional live sound service, tents, patio heaters
and Bend Roots t-shirts; as well as a jumpy structure, a face painter,
and art supplies for the Kidıs Art Tent.
Become a member of the Bend Roots Family by letting us know how you can
help. Tax-deductible charitable donations may be made directly to KPOV
Bend Community Radio and earmarked for the 2008 Bend Roots Revival. Just
remember to write ³Bend Roots Revival² on the memo line of your check.
